By Alicia Krahe
My transformation story is not far from most, I have spent most of my life overweight and struggling to overcome what I felt was my greatest difficulty. As a child, running and playing was something I avoided for fear of being bullied or made fun of because of my size. This stigma continued into high school, college, and finally was put to rest the summer after college when I had enough of hiding and being so heavy. At first I really didn’t have a clue how I would start to lose weight and it was so disheartening.
One day on a friend’s Facebook page I saw they had run in The Color Run. I started to creep around The Color Run’s page and saw pictures of these happy people who had just run in their races. In my mind I was thinking, “Oh my gosh, they’re all just crazy! No way are they this excited after running!” But being so willing to change, I decided I would try to train for my very first 5k. Please keep in mind, I had never run more than a mile (willingly) ever! Even in gym class I would cheat and pretend I completed the required mile test (sorry Mrs. Grabil).
Anyway, I began to run/walk on a treadmill that my parents kept in their garage and at the time, I was living in Oklahoma, where the temperature in that garage was about 110 degrees on a good day. I worked with what I had because running in public was just something I was not willing to do. SLOWLY over time I was able to jog a little longer and my walking time was less and less. Eventually running came into the picture and I could run almost a whole 5k.
I was so nervous when the day finally arrived that I would travel to Brooklyn, NY for The Color Run. I kept thinking “oh my gosh, there are going to be so many people there that are going to run so fast and they are going to laugh at me for being so slow!” Needless to say I was freaking out a little bit, but some encouragement from my boyfriend and the fact that I had come so far calmed me down enough to pick up my participant kit.
While waiting in line at packet pick-up I was looking around and everyone seemed so nice and excited! Their enthusiasm was really contagious and I knew this was going to be fun…and it was! I will never forget the celebration and the excitement I felt when I crossed the finish line. Something in me changed and it felt like fire. I couldn’t believe the limits I could take my body to! I felt so empowered when I finished The Color Run and I wanted to know what I could do next. At the time I completed the race I had lost about 20 pounds, but with continued training which opened up the world of healthy eating, I slowly, but surely lost 97 pounds. The weight loss I experienced was second to the healthy lifestyle that arose from a choice to try something new.
The Color Run helped me to be brave enough to change because of the warm, exciting environment it created. I am happy to say that this transformation I have undergone sparked a love for fitness that I now share with others. I recently opened my own personal training studio, Motivate Studios LLC, where I strive to create a comfortable, exciting environment similar to the environment I experienced when running The Color Run for the first time. I am so thankful to The Color Run for making exercise something so exciting and accepting. Without that first race, I’m not sure who I would’ve become or what direction I would have gone in.
Definitely one amazing progression story! If you’re inspired by Alicia and are looking to follow in her footsteps, check out the cities The Color Run will be visiting near you. It’ll definitely be something you won’t ever forget, and who knows? You might just make some friends who are on the same fitness quest as you are!
