The Color Run loves bringing people together. And as it turns out, many of you love it too!
We’ve heard some amazing love stories from Color Runners all over the country (and even from The Color Run employees!). Now we want to share our favorite love stories so you can feel the love. 🙂
Ashley and Michael Shrode – The Color Run Proposal
“The first time we ran the The Color Run it was my first 5k ever! It was seriously awesome… I ran the whole thing without stopping, which was a new milestone for me, but the music, fun, dancing and colors made it so spectacular! And then…”
The morning of July 15, 2012, when Ashley and Michael were getting ready to do The Color Run at the State Fairgrounds, Michael packed a little box with a diamond ring in his stuff. He asked his sister Sara to hold on to the ring while they ran. As Michael and Ashley were sprayed with various colors throughout the 5K, Michael did not show any sign of nervousness or any indication he was planning to ask the question.
After the run was over, and the large crowd of Color Runners gathered to do the huge color throw at the Finish Festival, Michael got the ring back from his sister. Ashley was oblivious! As hundreds of runners threw colored powder into the sky, Michael grabbed Ashley’s arm and asked her to marry him. Still to this day, he is not sure if she ever really answered him out loud or said anything, but the tears of joy and big smile on her face was enough of an answer for him and he placed the ring on her finger.
“We have run every year since and have made it our tradition. I ran/walked in 2015 while 6 months pregnant. And this year we are hoping to have our little 1 year old Liam do it with us! It is such a special event for us and we really love doing it! Each year we seem to bring a new crowd of family or friends to join in on the experience.”
Christa and Garrett Cotterell – Mixing Business and Love at The Color Run
Little did Christa Keele and Garrett Cotterell know when applying for jobs at The Color Run that they would not only embark on the professional ride of a lifetime, but that finding a spouse would be included in the job benefits. 😉
Christa was the first person Garrett met at The Color Run. She introduced herself and walked him in for his 2012 interview. He remembers telling himself, “I think I’m going to like this place…” Christa and Garrett were friendly, but didn’t interact often until a few months later when fate (or the matchmaking-employee who booked travel) stepped in. Just the two of them ended up on a plane to Seattle where they spent the next five days working together and realizing they didn’t hate being forced to spend time together. Christa distinctly remembers heading home from Seattle thinking, “Garrett is so nice and fun and funny and hard working and when did he get cute?!” Garrett asked Christa if he could take her out on a “real date” when they got back and the rest is history. They fell in love while traveling the country for work — visiting romantic cities such as Charleston, South Carolina, and lesser-known cities of romance like Tulsa, Oklahoma…. When you’re spending time with someone you’re crazy about, every city seems romantic!
Christa and Garrett even borrowed The Color Run’s practice of creating a staff packet for each event for their wedding. The packet included important maps, phone numbers, dates, times, and addresses for their friends and family to help everything run smoothly.
In addition to countless incredible memories from their time spent working at The Color Run, Christa and Garrett have each other and a two-year-old boy, Owen, all thanks to The Happiest 5K on the Planet.
Michelle and Darel McRae – A Colorful Family Tradition
“2014 was my favorite year of The Color Run because my husband and I were engaged at the time and it was his first run. I wore a veil and tiara with a “Bride To-Be” tank top and he wore a top hat with a “Groom To-Be” tank top. We had so much fun at The Color Run that year, and we have done two runs per year since then! Who knew that running could be made fun?! At first we weren’t able to run the entire 5K, but we practiced and got better each time. We feel so proud of each other at the finish line!
“We also love to wear outfits to add to the fun — Belly dancing skirts that jingle through the run, grass skirts and flower leis, white knees socks and glow sticks, veils, tiaras, top hats, Canadian flags and beaded t-shirts… it all adds to the fun.
“We’re going to kick-start spring with The Color Run in Rochester, NY and end summer with the run in Montreal QC. The McRae’s LOVE The Color Run!!
Shelly and Garrett – A Happy (5k) Future
“Last summer we vowed to make The Color Run our annual tradition. This summer we will vow to spend the rest of our lives together! I love running different races and The Color Run always stood out to me as such a fun experience that not only accepts but encourages individuality and happiness. So last year I finally convinced Garrett to do a race with me and we ran the Tropicolor race in Milwaukee, WI. We had an absolute blast and it was an amazing experience for the two of us to share together — and it was even more amazing that we ended up doing it in the city we grew up in together. The Color Run is truly ‘The Happiest 5K on the Planet’ and our new annual tradition. We cannot wait to see what The Color Run Dream Tour has in store!”
We’ll stick to the business of creating The Happiest 5K… but maybe matchmaking should be a backup plan;) If you have a love story you want to share, let us know in the comments, on our social media pages, or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org! 🙂
