Sometimes being happy is easier said than done. We hear all the time that happiness is a choice, but what does it take to make that choice? What steps do we have to take to be happy?
We don’t have the perfect recipe for happiness, but we hope these suggestions will give you a happy boost:
1. Enjoy the Journey
The most important thing to realize is that happiness is not a destination or the end point of a grand journey to having everything you want. We’ve all fallen victim to the thoughts about fancy new clothes and a larger salary that would finally make us happy once and for all. The problem with that is there will always be something better — something we want more. Rather than a destination, happiness is a journey! And no matter our life circumstances, we can choose to be happy at any point along the way. 🙂
2. Set Goals
Setting goals and working toward achieving them gives us purpose, a newfound work ethic, and something tangible to hold onto as we accomplish them. It’s all about creating short-term rewards for yourself. Each goal you set (short-term, long-term, and everything in between) is a proactive step towards creating the future you want versus being acted upon and waiting for your future to be chosen for you.
3. Recognize Happy
If you’re even reading this post, it means you have access to internet and either a computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet. You are so lucky! Try to keep things in perspective as you measure the problems in your life against your blessings. Focus on the good by making a conscious effort to recognize the seemingly insignificant things — what made you smile or caused a happy thought to cross your mind today? Start writing these things down in a gratitude journal! The more you practice this, the easier it will be to find these small joys in life. Make writing in your gratitude journal a habit, and happiness will become your habit too!
4. Look Outside Yourself
Rather than begrudgingly accepting the chances you have to serve those around you, look for these opportunities in your everyday life. Whether you provide a listening ear, a kind smile, or look around you at those who need a simple act of kindness, seeking out an opportunity to make someone else’s day will bring YOU happiness.
Not only does exercise help you physically, it can improve your mental state! From the endorphins released during exercise to the accomplished feeling of meeting personal goals, you can take happiness by the reins through exercise. You don’t need to hit up the gym or buy workout gear to exercise — remove the complexity and do a little each day.
What matters most? How can you define success? These are crucial questions to ask yourself as answering them will provide a framework upon which you can build your life. Fight the urge to define success as taking home a high paying salary, having no problems or having perfect relationships. When defining what success means to you simply focus on being the best you can be.
7. Have Patience with Yourself
We all fall short. So in the inevitable pursuit of perfection, understand it’s okay to fail. You only “fail” if you fail to learn and grown from your mistakes! Take the mental effort to accept yourself the way you are. Love everything about YOU — what you have, who you were, who you are, and who you can be.
